Over the last 10 years, as teams and team systems have become more prominent, Dr. Ray searched for an effective diagnostic instrument. None seemed to measure the critical ingredients of effective teamwork. To assess client organizations, Dr. Ray developed the Team-Based Work System Survey and standardized it across many different companies and industries.

The TBWS is used to assess team development points of strength and potential areas for improvement. The survey is composed of 74 questions that all team members complete. IPC scores the surveys and provides a report that can be customized to reflect organization, department or team-level profiles.

The TBWS integrates perceptions of management as well as trust between team members and the team coach. The survey focuses on the critical ingredients of effective management and coaching in high-performance teamwork.

Case Study:
Patchwork Traditional Foods of Wales, UK has used the TBWS for five years. Each time the survey is completed, the results are reviewed with the entire company and action plans are put in place to address deficiencies. Rufus Carter, the managing director, uses the results to identify specific areas for team and organizational development. He works with the Team Developers to help the teams learn new skills.

In the past, the organization has worked on such areas as team goal focus and problem solving. The results can be seen in the
changes on the survey over the years. The survey can identify very specific issues within and between teams. For example, a team may have internal conflict. The TBWS can spot this and help the coach and team look objectively at themselves to deal with the conflict productively.

At Patchwork, the TBWS showed some major differences between manufacturing teams and office teams. This allowed the management team and steering committee to develop specific strategies for addressing the unique problems of these teams.
